Sunday Scoop: Happy Easter!

Happy Sunday and Easter! Here is a quick one before we are off to church!
Thanks to the Teaching Trio for hosting!
Have to:
  • Grocery Shopping:
    • Literally, no food in the house. I mean the milk, no cereal, ham, no burger kind. The problem is that I have been buying staples but not buying with specific meals in mind. So after church, off to the store we go.
  • Blueberry bush
    • I have to plant my little bush today. I don't want it to start wilting on me. I might even need to buy another one for cross-pollination purposes (according to the box).
  • Work conference
    • I have a work conference all weekend, this weekend coming up. Prep, prep, and more prep.
Hope to:
  • One Minute Millionaire
    • I can't wait to finish this book. I picked up after walking with the family yesterday and couldn't put it down.
Image result for one minute millionaire
  • Sight word spelling:
    • I have to finish writing out the unit so that I can type it out tomorrow.  More to come in future posts!
Happy to do!
  • Now it's time to get ready for church! Happy Easter Sunday!

We were on the floor trying to get her to smile but as you can see, all she did was look at us. She is still adorable anyway :)

What are your Sunday plans?

You Ought to Know: Test Prep Incentives

Hi All! Happy Saturday!
Today I am linking up with Mrs. McClain over at Buzzing with Mrs. McClain for her monthly You Oughta Know blog hop. Other bloggers and I will be sharing things that you “oughta know” for your classroom.

For the past three weeks, I have been blogging about Test Prep Tips in an effort to simplify test prep preparation and anxiety for students AND teachers.

This month, You Oughta Know About... Testing Incentives!!!

With the state test looming at the end of the month, it is easy for teachers and students to be overwhelmed with the preparation for it.

Enter Star Charms!

Reading Stars

Back Story

When I was teaching, we had to some up with a way of encouraging our students to show what they know for the ACTAAP test (The Arkansas State Test). We chose to focus specifically on Open Response Questions because of their weight on the test and our students past issues in answering them correctly.

Design

We ran the program in 3-5, because those are the tested grades, and the grades of our Upper Elementary School. All students took an open response question in math and in reading and turned them into the principal. It was a simple question taken from past tests, printed on a half sheet of paper. Students had 15 minutes to answer each question and write their names on the paper. Afterwards, all of the papers were collected and turned into the main office.
The students who were proficient/advanced received their papers back with one of these stars.

Impact

Students loved them! They loved wearing them on their wrists or on their necklaces and earning them for showing what they knew! We saw a dramatic difference in students energy and enthusiasm when prepping for the test. One of the best parts was how inexpensive the stars were. They are $5.49 for 25 multi-colored charms and $20 for a 100.
Math Award Stars

Adaptations

Thinking over this system, I would definitely award students stars based on growth on each category.  You want to encourage ALL students as much as possible and encourage their growth.

I would also purchase additional charm packs for other incentives. There are number packs that I would use to track how many books each of my students read throughout the year.

Standardized Test Prep Freebie!

I love that the star theme also carries over to this FREEBIE, I made to track student progress on specific learning objectives.

Five for Friday and Friday Freebie!

It's Friday and time to list my Five for Friday  with Doodlebugs Teaching!

I love Fridays! Because I work for with after-school program, we only work Monday through Thursday. I love my day just to chill with Papaya and catch up on blog posts or plan for my next project.

Speaking of plans, I'm loving working on my next Sight Words unit. I finally figured out the quickest way of sorting my materials.

I'll post next week on the binder after I'm finished, but here is a sneak peek!

Our little deck needs perking p after all that snow and cold weather. I picked up this bluebrry bush from Aldi's last week for 5.99 and I am planning to put it outside tomorrow. I think it is amazing that it started to sprout in the bag already. I just left it near the window and literally overnight the little leaves started to poke out. You have to love God's miracles!

I also love my new pedometer. I have had a body media arm band, a fit bit for a second, and a my sync which I quickly returned. It was $16 dollars at Wal-mart and links to nothing! All the other fitness trackers require your phone and internet and subscriptions, but at the end of the day, I just need to know how far I walked. So far, this has worked better than all of them. No charging, no glitches, no problems. I bought one for my honey too, and we are in a competition to see who can do the most steps each day. He cheated already though! He held me down as he jogged in place smh. I'll admit I did take his and try to hide it, but his cheating should always be considered worse than mine ;). I'm planning on doing a couple of extra laps around the grocery store later on to ensure he goes down in defeat.

Finally to round out the day, relaxing with Redbox.

I love documentaries about real people and their lives. We already watched the documentary about Alan Turing's life on Netflix, so I'm excited to see the differences in the film.

So that's it!

Haha! Leftover April Fools :)

Here is the link to My Friday Freebie! I am working on a new set of sight word sheets for my kids who struggle with word id, spelling, reading and writing. They are intended to be double sided for first, second and third grade usage. The image below is a preview of the sheets, from the Fry Words Second 100 set. I will be finishing them this weekend!

Sunday Scoop: March 29, 2015

Happy Sunday!
Sunday Scoop Time with Teaching Trio!

Have to do:

  • Create themes for books
    • At the last staff meeting, we talked about how to group the books in themes. I aam planning to go through the books and try to create some sort of alignment guide for book selection. So if we have a lot of non-fiction books about animals at a certain level, that we can have activities to go along with them to make the learning more cohesive for the students.
  • Begin Testing
    • It's testing time! For the next seven weeks, I will be doing testing for our sites. It's a big job with over 300 students to test, but like the topic says, it's something I have to do.
  • YQPA
    • Ughh!!! Definitely on the have to do list. I had to do an evaluation of two programs and have to upload the content tomorrow morning. I am soooooooo not looking forward to this. I have had to attend trainings, conduct multiple observations, and do all of these things for work. I honestly don't like doing it and considered failing the qualifying exam so I won't have to do it it, but c'est la vie. The good news is that after tomorrow it will be done, so thank heaven for that.

Hope to do:

  • Start planning for summer institute
    • My books came in (see the happy to do below) and I hope to start thinking about my summer job and how to incorporate this material. I will be training 40-50 Teach for America teachers this summer as a Diversity and Community Specialist. It will be considerably easier this summer as I will not be 9 months pregnant lol. We had great results last summer, so I am just looking forward to improving my sessions for this year.
  • Get addresses
    • Sigh, wedding plans, oh wedding plans. This is the week to send the Save the Dates for everyone. Four months out and I am personally stressed. Can I get a Woo Sah? I know I just have to take everything day by day

Happy To do!

  • Read my new books!
    • So excited to check the mail today! For the record, we only go to the mailbox every two weeks. I hate, hate, hate bills, so checking the mail every day is not my thing. I was happy to get my new books!
I have Doing Critical Literacy by Hilary Janks to inform my summer work and a series of articles I want to write for Teacher Feature Thursday. The Classroom Management Book by Harry Wong to best support my teachers this summer, and The Morning Meeting Book to inform their planning for their morning meeting time.

I can't wait to get started with these books!

What is your week looking like?

Book Study: Worksheets Don't Grow Dendrites: Chapter 7

Nothing is better than a good book, especially one that gives you great ideas for instruction. That's why I'm sharing the wisdom gleaned from the book study of Worksheets Don't Grow Dendrites by Dr. Marcia Tate, hosted this week by Teacher Extraordinaire Deanna Jump.

This week I'm writing about Chapter 7: The Use of Manipulatives, Experiments. Labs, and Models.

I really enjoyed reading her opening story of her daughter's classroom experience in chemistry and the lack of alignment between the work she was doing and what real chemist would do. A lot of what we ask students to do is just memorize the information and be able to repeat/write it back. I started to think about ways to empower students to do the teaching and learning.

How often do we just give students paper and pencil to demonstrate their learning? I certainly know I'm guilty. This chapter took me back to a science lesson in my first year of teaching, where my students had to draw a model of an animal cell. When it came to draw pictures of the cells, students simply copied the cell from the book. I actually cringe internally when I think of my first year teaching in a self contained classroom. I always felt so overwhelmed and always in scramble mode to come up with lessons, so that many times I didn't think about the bigger picture when teaching.

By year three, in my math and science departmentalized classroom, we were building camera obscuras, growing pumpkins for Halloween, and conducting weekly science experiments. Much better!

Recording our observations

How can you make a sunset

Add milk to water to simulate the dusk and dirt in the air and the n shine a light through it. It created pink light :)

Growing Pumpkins for Halloween

The kids really enjoyed growing the pumpkins. They made the containers out of their milk cartons. We cut out a section and taped plastic over the hole so they could see the root systems growing.

Creating camera obscuras from shoe boxes and wax paper

They studied light by making camera obscuras using wax paper and shoe boxes. It was a really interesting lesson. They kept running around to see the images in their boxes. :)

Overall, I enjoyed this section because it helped me to reflect on my growth so far as a teacher and provided new ideas to push my instruction and materials further, Many of the students in my program would benefit from more hands on opportunities to learn. We already have manipulatives for them to use during homework help, so I am interested in how to help them incorporate them in new learning activities.

I certainly use these tips with the first year teachers I work with now, especially the non-verbal assessments for student knowledge. I had them develop more signals for I have something to add, I agree, and I disagree.

Below are my take aways and my plans to implement them in the future.

What were your take aways?

Sunday Scoop: March 22, 2015

Happy Sunday!
Checking with The Teaching Trio for the Sunday Scoop!

Have to Do

  • Wisdom Teeth
    • Yes, I have to get my wisdom teeth out. Surgically removed. Monday morning at 8 am. So this time tomorrow, i will be minus 2 teeth and 1500 dollars. yay...
  • Odd and Even Unit
    • On a happier note, I will be finishing up by new unit on even and odd. So as I am nursing my mouth, I can finish up my answer keys.
  • Guest List
    • I'm finally getting okay with the guest list. We have a limit and some people won't be able to come. Some people will expect invitations, but the truth of the matter is, I really don't like them. Harsh I know, but it's my day and I want to have fun and not worry about Ms. Judgy McJudgerson. They will probably get mad and not speak to me, but WE DON'T speak anyway lol. (Steps down from soapbox). Anyway, it's nice to get the list together and get ready to send out the invites.

Hope to Do

  • Next Unit
    • After Odd and Even, I hope to start planning my unit skill unit. I'm thinking skip counting and pirates? Word problems and puppies? Hmm...
  • Deep Clean
    • It's past time to get this place together. We have been traveling and the suitcases sadly are still on the guest room floor. Over the next week, I hope to deep clean as I go room by room.

Happy To Do

  • Enjoy Spring Break
    • Even though I have the surgery scheduled and cleaning on the list, I hope to get out and do something new towards the end of the week. Papaya will be in daycare so I will have the day to myself, It might just be a Netflix fest, but hey! It's MY netflix fest lol.
How is you week looking?

Teaching Idea Tuesday: Multiplication

My contribution to Teaching Idea Tuesday is centered on multiplication. At one of our sites, one of our site coordinators noticed that the students were having trouble with their memorization of their multiplication facts. Because we have a small group format, we had different children who were successful with different multiplication facts.

Included are badges that students can earn as they master each level.
At the same time, there are quizzes for each set of math facts and one page printable games for students to play.

Below are the game covers. Aren't they cute?

Sunday Scoop - March 1, 2015

So glad to link up with Teaching Trio for my first Sunday Scoop.
Here is the scoop of my week!

  1. Have

    • Compliance Binder:
      • We are being audited by the state and my task (that I was unwilling to accept) is to update all of the information so that we are compliant for the audit. This is a grand undertaking for which I am T-minus 4 days. I will cross all of my fingers and toes and pray to the Lord that it will completed in time and that we will be successful in the audit.
    • Math Master Multiplication
      • I have been working on a unit for the past two weeks to help our students with their math facts mastery. The main struggle has been to balance the amount of practice with ease of use. I love that each game is on a single page for ease of use for teachers, staff, and students. I just have to buckle down and finish making each of the sheets.
    • Dentist appointment
      • Time to call the oral surgeon. These wisdom teeth are coming out in the nest two weeks. Time to stop procrastinating and make the appointment. Sigh

      2. Hope

    • Send bridesmaids invitations
      • I have been seriously slacking on wedding planning. I'm really tempted to elope during the TPT conference in Las Vegas this year. 2 birds and all that jazz. But I have to get everything together, especially with only 5 months left. It's a simple affair of mostly family, so I'm not top worried, but I think I have to invite people if I expect them to come lol,
    • Continue eating plan
      • With all of the ice and snow, I have seriously been hibernating and alas, packing on the pounds. I ate all of the warm comfort foods like soup and chili, with the side of cornbread, as well as plenty of take out. March 1st is a great time to begin reigning in the meal and exercise plan and I fully intend to comply this week.

     3. Happy

    • Time to create goals for the month! I have have definitely not been as accountable towards my goals. By May 31st, I my goal is 100. A hundred facebook followers, 100 products in my store, and 100 followers for TPT. I have to continue to use my gift to create materials to empower students and their teachers. So excited to get started.

What do you have to, hope to, and happy to do this week?
